What to Wear on a Desert Safari, Including Winter

The single most common mistake is dressing for the temperature at pickup. You are collected from an air-conditioned lobby in the afternoon and returned to it late at night, and in between the temperature can move by twenty degrees.

Footwear, which matters most

Flat, closed shoes you do not mind filling with sand. Trainers are ideal. Sand gets into everything regardless, so this is about stability rather than keeping clean.

Heels are the classic error. Soft sand and a stiletto are incompatible, and this includes at weddings, we tell couples to put a line about flat or block heels in the invitation, because it prevents most of the discomfort before it happens. Sandals are fine around camp but poor for walking up a dune.

Layers, because the drop is real

From November to February the temperature falls sharply after sunset, and by the small hours it is genuinely cold. A jacket that feels absurd at 4pm will be the thing you are grateful for at 9pm. Bring one even if the forecast looks warm; forecasts report daytime highs.

In summer the reverse applies, but evenings still cool noticeably once the sun is down.

What to wear in winter specifically

Long trousers, a long-sleeved layer, and a proper jacket or fleece. A scarf is genuinely useful, for warmth, and for wind-blown sand. Most camps provide blankets, but they are for sitting, not for walking around in.

Fabrics and colour

Loose, breathable natural fabrics work best. Linen and cotton beat synthetics for both heat and comfort on sand. Pale colours stay cooler in daylight. Anything white will not stay white.

Cultural notes

The UAE is relaxed about visitor dress, and desert camps more so than most settings, but modest layers are appreciated, especially where there is cultural programming or a traditional performance. Bring, and leave behind

• Bring: sunglasses, a hat for daylight, sunscreen, a light scarf, a power bank, and wet wipes in quantities that feel excessive.
• Bring for overnight: a change of clothes, warm socks, and something to sleep in that you do not mind being sandy.
• Leave: heels, anything white you care about, a heavy bag, and a drone unless a permit has been filed for you.
