The Liwa Empty Quarter is the edge of the Rub' al Khali, the largest sand desert on earth, and the most dramatic dune backdrop Sparkling Sandset operates in. Dunes here rise well over 100 metres, giving a scale that Al Khatim's rolling terrain cannot match.
We use Liwa for team-building programmes, luxury glamping retreats, brand content shoots and small private celebrations where the landscape itself is the reason for travelling. Because the site is remote and the terrain is steeper, we cap guest numbers and bring in more of our own infrastructure per booking than at Al Khatim.
Every Liwa booking includes 4x4 recovery vehicles, a medical standby and a satellite communication link, since mobile signal is unreliable deep in the dune field.

Permit notes: Liwa sits within the Al Dhafra region and requires a separate desert-use permit from the local municipality; drone filming needs a further clearance given the site's proximity to protected conservation areas, both of which we arrange in advance

Where exactly is the Liwa Empty Quarter site?+
It sits at the edge of the Rub' al Khali dune field in the Al Dhafra region, roughly 2.5 hours from Abu Dhabi city and 3.5 hours from Dubai by road. It is the most remote site we operate, chosen specifically for its scale and isolation.
What kind of events suit Liwa rather than Al Khatim?+
Team-building programmes that want dramatic terrain, luxury glamping retreats, brand content shoots and small private celebrations where the landscape is the centrepiece. For weddings and large galas over 150 guests, Al Khatim is the better fit.
Is overnight glamping available at Liwa?+
Yes, in private en-suite tents with air conditioning and hot water, capped at around 60 guests per night to keep the setup manageable on soft dune terrain.
Is there mobile signal on site?+
Coverage is unreliable deep in the dune field. Every booking includes a satellite internet and communications link so guests and crew stay connected.
How is power and water supplied at such a remote site?+
There is no grid connection at Liwa, so all power comes from portable generators and all water is trucked in and stored in insulated tanks on site. We size both to the guest count and length of stay.
What safety measures are in place given the terrain?+
Every Liwa booking includes a dedicated 4x4 recovery crew and an on-site medical standby, since the dunes are steeper and softer than at Al Khatim and self-recovery is not realistic.
