Wadi Shawka Camping: What to Know Before You Go

Wadi Shawka is one of the most searched camping places in the northern emirates, and it deserves it. A wide dry riverbed cuts between Hajar rock walls, the nights are quiet and the stars are strong. It is also a place where a casual weekend can go wrong in ways people do not expect.
Where it is and how long it takes
Wadi Shawka sits in the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, close to the Sharjah border. From Dubai it is roughly an hour and a quarter, a little less from Sharjah. The approach is tarmac, and you leave it for graded tracks near the wadi floor. A normal car can reach the first areas in dry conditions, while a 4x4 helps further in.

The season that works
November to March. Daytime is mild and nights are cool, sometimes cold. In summer the rock holds heat after dark and the wadi is not a place to be outside in July. Winter nights are colder than most people pack for.
Flash floods are the real hazard
A wadi is a drainage channel. Rain falling in the mountains upstream can send water down a dry bed within minutes, with no rain at your own tent.
- Never pitch inside the channel. Camp on raised ground well clear of the bed.
- Check the forecast for the whole mountain range, not just your location.
- If rain is forecast anywhere in the Hajar, move or cancel.
- Know your exit, and do not rely on a track that crosses the channel.
What to bring
More water than you think, a cold-rated sleeping bag and mat, a headtorch, a first-aid kit, an offline map and bags for all your rubbish. Use a small stove rather than an open fire unless fires are allowed where you are.
Rules and permissions
Camping rules in Ras Al Khaimah vary by zone and have changed more than once. Some areas are protected, some are privately held and some restrict fires, drones or amplified sound. Check with the Ras Al Khaimah tourism authority or municipality before you go, and follow any signage.
A note on what we do. We do not run campsites or events in open areas in Ras Al Khaimah, because that needs a licence we do not hold. If you are planning an event rather than a camping trip, we design and produce events inside the emirate's hotels and ballrooms. See events in Ras Al Khaimah.
FAQs
Is camping allowed at Wadi Shawka?
Rules depend on the zone and change over time. Confirm with the Ras Al Khaimah authorities before you travel.
Is Wadi Shawka safe to camp in?
It is, if you camp on raised ground away from the channel and check the forecast for the whole range. Flash floods are the main risk.
Do I need a 4x4?
The first areas are reachable in a normal car in dry weather. A 4x4 helps on graded tracks and in loose sand.
What is the best month?
December and January for cool weather, with a cold-rated sleeping bag. March is also pleasant.
