Search for Jebel Jais camping and the autocomplete finishes the sentence: allowed, rules, free, booking, package price. That tells you what people want to know first, and it comes down to one question: can I just turn up?

The honest answer is that it depends on where, and the rules move.

What Jebel Jais is

Jebel Jais is the mountain massif above Ras Al Khaimah. The road to the top is a famous drive, and the summit area has become a base for adventure activities run by their own operators. Those attractions are separate from camping.

Rules, and why we will not quote them

Camping on and around Jebel Jais has been managed through designated areas and permissions, and the details have shifted over time. We do not operate campsites, so do not take a rulebook from us. Ask the Ras Al Khaimah tourism authority or the relevant operator. If a source says "free" or "allowed" with no date, assume it is out of date.

What height does to a night

  • It is colder. Even when the coast is mild, the mountain can be several degrees cooler.
  • Wind matters. A tent that is fine in a wadi can flap loose on a ridge. Pitch low and guy it out.
  • Cloud arrives fast. Visibility on a mountain road drops quickly, so descend in daylight.

What to pack

A cold-rated sleeping bag, a proper mat, a windproof layer, a hat, gloves from December, a headtorch and a stove. Bring your own water.

A note on what we do. We do not run campsites or events in open areas in Ras Al Khaimah, because that needs a licence we do not hold. If you are planning an event rather than a camping trip, we design and produce events inside the emirate's hotels and ballrooms. See events in Ras Al Khaimah.
