Sandboarding in the UAE: A Straight Guide

Sandboarding in the UAE: A Straight Guide - Sparkling Sandset luxury desert camp, Abu Dhabi

Sandboarding is the most consistently enjoyed activity at any UAE desert camp and the one people are most needlessly nervous about. It is slower, softer and far more forgiving than the name suggests.

How it differs from snowboarding

Sand has much more friction than snow, so you go slower. That single fact removes most of the risk and most of the fear. You will not build the speed that makes a snowboard fall hurt, and the landing is sand.

It also means you need a steeper slope than you would on snow to get moving at all, and that boards are waxed to reduce drag. If your board has not been waxed, you will spend the run stopping.

Standing versus sitting

Most first-timers go down sitting or lying, and that is genuinely fine, it is faster and easier to control. Children almost always prefer it.

Standing is closer to snowboarding: feet strapped or footholds, weight centred, knees soft, look where you are going rather than at your feet. Expect to fall a few times. It does not hurt.

The actual effort is the walk back up

Nobody warns people about this. Climbing a dune in soft sand is genuinely hard work, you sink with every step and the return climb takes several times as long as the descent.

Which is why two or three runs is usually the honest limit for most adults, and why children who seem tireless will suddenly stop. Zigzag rather than going straight up, and use the firmer sand on the windward face.

Where

Any camp with a decent dune. What you want is a face steep enough to move on with a clean run-out at the bottom and no vehicles crossing.

Lahbab in Dubai has steep red dunes that are excellent for it. Al Khatim has gentler faces that suit beginners and children better. Liwa has enormous slopes that are genuinely serious, part of the scale covered in our Liwa and Empty Quarter guide.

Practical

  • Closed shoes. Sand at the bottom of a dune gets hot in daylight.
  • Clothes you do not mind. You will be covered in sand, and it goes everywhere.
  • Sunglasses, and hold onto them.
  • Empty your pockets. Phones lost in soft sand are rarely found.
  • Late afternoon or morning. Midday sand is too hot to walk on comfortably.

Ages and safety

From about five, sitting. Standing works from around eight or nine depending on confidence. There is no real upper age limit for sitting runs.

The genuine risks are minor: sand in the eyes, and overheating from the climb rather than the ride. Hydrate more than feels necessary.

FAQs

Is sandboarding difficult?

Sitting, not at all. Standing takes a few attempts. Both are easier than they look.

Is it included at desert camps?

Usually yes, as a standard activity. Quad biking is more often charged separately.

Can children do it?

Yes, and they generally enjoy it more than adults. They will do it until told to stop.

Do I need my own board?

No. Camps provide boards and wax them.
