Liwa Desert Weather: When to Go, Month by Month

Liwa is inland and it behaves like it. Without the coast to moderate things, summer runs hotter than Abu Dhabi city and winter nights run colder. Both catch people out.

November to March: go now

The window. Daytime is comfortable, often genuinely pleasant, and the light is at its best. This is when everything worth doing in Liwa is doable.

The catch is the nights. Single digits is normal in December and January, and with wind it feels far colder. Visitors packing for "the desert" bring shorts and nothing else, then spend the night awake and miserable. Bring a proper jacket, warm socks and a hat.

April and October: workable shoulders

Warm days, comfortable evenings. Fewer visitors than peak. Late April starts to bite in the afternoon, so shift activity to the ends of the day.

May to September: avoid, mostly

Daytime heat in Liwa is genuinely dangerous rather than merely uncomfortable, and there is no natural shade anywhere. Sand surface temperatures make barefoot walking impossible.

If you must go in summer, it is a dawn-and-dusk proposition only, with serious water, shade and a vehicle you trust. We do not run Liwa builds in high summer, and we say so rather than selling one.

Wind and sand

Liwa gets windy, particularly in spring. Wind does three things: it drops visibility, it makes fine sand get into everything, and it rules out anything tall and fabric-based at an event. Blowing sand is more common here than in the coastal belt.

Genuine sandstorms are forecastable a day or two ahead. The more common reality is a stiff wind that makes an exposed ridge unpleasant while the lee of a dune is fine.

Rain

Rare, and heavy when it comes. The practical effect is not the water but what it does to the ground afterwards: soft corridors can become impassable, and access routes change. We check conditions two days ahead of any build and hold an alternative.

Planning around it

• Photography: December to February for clear air and long light.
• Overnight camping: November to March, packed for cold.
• Events and groups: November to March. Shoulder months for value.
• Dune driving: cooler months, when the sand is firmer at the surface.

We do not recommend it and do not build there in high summer. Al Khatim with proper cooling is the better summer option.
