A Liwa Desert Safari Is Not a Dubai Desert Safari

A Liwa Desert Safari Is Not a Dubai Desert Safari - Sparkling Sandset luxury desert camp, Abu Dhabi

People book a "Liwa desert safari" expecting the Dubai format, an afternoon pickup, a dune run, a camp with a show, home by ten. Liwa does not work that way, and the mismatch causes most of the disappointment we hear about.

The drive changes everything

Two and a half to three hours each way from Abu Dhabi. That is five to six hours of driving on top of whatever you do there. An evening trip means arriving in the dark, seeing nothing, and driving home exhausted.

Liwa is a full day at minimum, and it is genuinely better as an overnight.

What a realistic day looks like

Leave Abu Dhabi early, around 7am. Arrive late morning, stop at the Moreeb Dune area, spend the afternoon in the dune fields with lunch under shade, catch sunset from a ridge, and either drive back arriving late or stay the night.

The overnight version is the one worth doing: dinner as the light goes, the sky after dark, and sunrise over dunes that look nothing like they did the evening before.

The dunes

This is why you come. Liwa's dunes reach over three hundred metres, and the driving is correspondingly serious, steeper faces, softer sand, higher consequences. Experienced desert drivers rate Liwa well above the Dubai belt for exactly this reason.

If you are prone to motion sickness, it is more demanding than a Lahbab dune run. Say so in advance; a scenic route exists.

Who it suits

  • Photographers. The scale and the clean horizons are unmatched closer to the cities.
  • Repeat visitors who have done the standard safari and found it underwhelming.
  • Incentive and corporate groups on a multi-day programme, where the drive becomes part of the experience.
  • Anyone who wants dark skies. Nothing near a UAE city compares.

Who it does not suit

Visitors with one free evening. Families with young children, for whom six hours in a car is the dominant memory. Anyone hoping for a quick taste of the desert, the Dubai or Al Khatim belt does that better and closer. Our Liwa and Empty Quarter desert guide and guide to the best time to visit a desert camp are both worth reading before you commit to the drive.

Practical notes

  • Fuel up before you leave the main road; stations are sparse.
  • Signal disappears in the dune fields.
  • Winter nights are cold. Bring more than you think.
  • Check the Liwa Festival dates if you want quiet, or if you want the festival.

FAQs

How long is a Liwa desert safari?

A full day at minimum, twelve hours door to door from Abu Dhabi. Overnight is the better format.

Is Liwa better than Dubai for a safari?

Better dunes and far more solitude; worse for convenience. If you have one evening, Dubai. If you have a day or two, Liwa.

Can you do Liwa as a day trip from Dubai?

Technically, at around eight hours of driving. We would not recommend it.

Do you run events in Liwa?

Yes, usually as part of multi-day programmes. Everything travels three hours, so it needs more lead time and a bigger build than Al Khatim.
