If there is a single safety message for anyone visiting a Fujairah wadi, it is this: a wadi can flood while the sky above you is clear. People are caught out because they judge the risk by the weather overhead.

How it happens

A wadi is a drainage channel for the mountains. When heavy rain falls in the catchment, runoff gathers and rushes downhill through the channel. The surface is rock and gravel, so little soaks in. A flash flood can arrive in minutes, fast and carrying stones.

Reading the forecast

  • Check the national weather service for the whole Hajar range, not just the nearest town.
  • Check the day before, the morning of, and again in the afternoon.
  • Pay attention to any warning issued for the mountains.
  • If you see dark cloud over the mountains upstream, treat it as a warning.

Where to stop

On raised ground, well above the channel and its banks, with an exit that does not cross the bed. Avoid low terraces and the outside of bends, and never park in the channel.

What to do if water arrives

Move to higher ground immediately, leaving belongings behind. Do not try to cross moving water on foot or by car. Call the emergency number and give your location.

Why this matters to our work

Flood risk and the licences for land use are two reasons we do not hold events in wadis or other open areas in Fujairah. We produce events inside hotels and licensed venues, where the venue's safety systems apply.

A note on what we do. We do not run campsites or events on beaches, in wadis or on mountains in Fujairah, because that needs a licence we do not hold. If you are planning an event rather than a camping trip, we design and produce events inside Fujairah's hotels and ballrooms. See events in Fujairah.

FAQs

Can a wadi flood when it is not raining?

Yes. Rain upstream can send water through a dry channel with no rain at your location.

How fast does a flash flood arrive?

Within minutes of heavy rain in the catchment.

Is it ever safe to camp in the channel?

No. Always use raised ground clear of the bed.

Where can I host an event safely in Fujairah?

In a hotel ballroom or licensed indoor venue. We design and produce those.
