Abu Dhabi or Dubai for a Desert Safari

It is the most common question we get from visitors, and the answer genuinely depends on what you want from the evening rather than on which emirate is better. We run bookings in both, so here is the comparison without a thumb on the scale.

Getting there

Dubai's desert belt near Al Qudra and Lahbab sits roughly 35 to 50 minutes from Downtown. That proximity is its main advantage and the source of its main drawback.

Abu Dhabi's dune country around Al Khatim is about 50 minutes from the Corniche and 90 from Dubai. Liwa, at the edge of the Empty Quarter, is two and a half to three hours from Abu Dhabi and a different proposition entirely, covered in full in our Liwa and Empty Quarter guide.

How busy it feels

This is the real difference. Dubai's accessible desert carries a lot of operators, so on a winter weekend you will see other convoys, hear other camps and share the dune line. Abu Dhabi's belt is quieter simply because fewer operations run there. After dark the difference is stark: Al Khatim gets genuinely dark, and you can see stars that Dubai's glow washes out, which is why it is one of the better bases for the kind of night described in our Abu Dhabi stargazing guide.

The dunes themselves

Dubai's Lahbab red dunes are photogenic and dramatic for dune bashing. Abu Dhabi's are paler and more open. Liwa is a different scale altogether, some of the largest dunes on earth, and worth the drive if you have a full day rather than an evening.

Price

Broadly comparable at the shared-tour tier. Dubai has more operators competing, so budget tickets are marginally cheaper and more plentiful. For private bookings the difference is mostly permits and logistics rather than the emirate.

Permits, which matters for events

Dubai's desert sits inside municipality conservation zones, so a private booking there involves a Dubai Municipality site permit and, for anything branded or filmed, a separate filming and events notice. Abu Dhabi bookings from a camp the operator owns need no third-party landowner in the chain. If you are planning an event rather than buying a ticket, that difference shows up as lead time.

Which to choose

If you are trying to work out what actually counts as the best Abu Dhabi desert safari for your trip, the honest answer depends on what you are optimising for, quiet and dark skies, or the shortest possible drive.

• Staying in Dubai with one free evening: Dubai. The extra hour of driving to Abu Dhabi is not worth it for a shared tour.
• Want quiet, dark skies and space: Abu Dhabi.
• Planning a private event, wedding or offsite: Abu Dhabi, usually. Fewer neighbours and a simpler permit chain.
• Want the biggest dunes you have ever seen: Liwa, with a full day set aside.
• Photography: Dubai for red dunes, Abu Dhabi for open horizons and clean night skies.

Abu Dhabi tends to be calmer, which suits younger children. Dubai's shorter drive matters if bedtime is a constraint.

Can I do a desert safari from Dubai in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. It is about 90 minutes each way, so it works as an evening if the timing is planned, and comfortably as a full day.

Is Liwa worth the drive?

For an overnight or a multi-day programme, yes, comfortably. For a single evening, no, you would spend more time driving than in the desert.
