Al Khatim or Liwa: Choosing Between Abu Dhabi's Two Deserts

Abu Dhabi has two desert experiences worth the trip and they are not interchangeable. We operate our own camp at Al Khatim and build in Liwa for clients who want it, so here is the comparison from both sides.

Al Khatim

About fifty minutes from the Abu Dhabi Corniche, in the Barma North dune belt. Rolling dunes rather than towering ones, scattered palms, firm access most of the year. Our Al Wathba and Al Khatim hidden gems guide covers the belt in more detail if you want to explore it beyond a single camp visit.

Strengths: reachable for an evening, so it works on a weeknight. Quiet enough for genuinely dark skies. Firm ground means reliable build conditions and no drama getting a coach close. Because the drive is short, guests arrive fresh rather than travel-worn.

Limitations: the dunes are handsome rather than staggering. If you have already seen a lot of desert, it will not astonish you.

Liwa

Two and a half to three hours southwest, at the edge of the Empty Quarter. Dunes over three hundred metres. Our full Liwa and Empty Quarter desert guide covers the region in depth, from the oasis villages to Tal Moreeb.

Strengths: genuine scale, the kind that makes people stop talking. Almost no one there outside festival season. The darkest skies in the country.

Limitations: the drive rules out an evening. Everything for an event travels three hours, which costs money and time. Summer is genuinely unusable. Access needs proper off-road capability.

Choosing

• One evening available: Al Khatim. Liwa in an evening means arriving in the dark.
• A full day or an overnight: Liwa, if scale is what you want.
• Corporate dinner or offsite on a weekday: Al Khatim, comfortably.
• Multi-day incentive programme: Liwa as the centrepiece, often with a night at Al Khatim to bookend it.
• Wedding: Al Khatim, almost always. Guests, suppliers and elderly relatives all have to make the drive.
• Photography: Liwa for scale, Al Khatim for reliable access and repeat visits.
• Summer: Al Khatim with cooling. Not Liwa.

The cost difference

For an event, Liwa costs more and the reason is transport, not the site. Every structure, generator, crew member and tray of food travels three hours each way, and the build day extends accordingly. That is worth it for a two-night programme where the landscape is the point. For a single dinner it buys you a longer drive rather than a better evening.

Can I visit both in one trip?

Yes, and it works well: a night at Al Khatim and a day trip or overnight to Liwa.
