Camping in Liwa: A Complete Guide to the Empty Quarter's Edge

Most people who say they have seen the UAE desert have seen the belt within an hour of a city. Liwa is a different order of thing. It sits at the northern edge of the Rub' al Khali, the Empty Quarter, and the dunes there are among the largest on earth, Tal Moreeb rises over three hundred metres, at a slope steep enough that it hosts a hill climb.

It is also two and a half to three hours from Abu Dhabi, which is precisely why it stays quiet.

Getting there

From Abu Dhabi, roughly 250km southwest, two and a half to three hours on good road through Madinat Zayed. From Dubai, add an hour and a half. The drive is straightforward tarmac until you leave it.

The moment you turn off, you need a proper 4x4, deflated tyres and someone who has driven soft sand before. Liwa dunes are steep and the sand is fine. This is not the place to learn.

When to go

November to March. Liwa is hotter than the coast in summer, sometimes brutally, and there is no shade at all.

Winter nights get genuinely cold, single digits is normal, and colder in a strong wind. Visitors consistently underpack for this. The Liwa Festival, usually around December and January, brings crowds and closures worth checking before you plan around it.

Wild camping versus a serviced camp

Liwa has open ground where camping is broadly tolerated, and it attracts a lot of independent campers in winter. If you go that way:

• Travel in at least two vehicles. Recovery on your own out there is a serious situation.
• Carry recovery boards, a shovel, a compressor and a tow rope, and know how to use them.
• Take far more water than you think, plus fuel for the return.
• Expect no mobile signal in the dune fields. Tell someone your route and expected return.
• Navigate properly. Dunes look identical and landmarks vanish after dark.
• Take everything out again, including waste and fire debris.

A serviced camp gets you the same landscape with washrooms, power, food handled safely and a crew who know the ground. For a group, a family, or anyone who has not driven deep sand before, it is the sensible option rather than the soft one.

What Liwa gives you that the closer desert does not

Scale, first. The dunes near Dubai are photogenic; Liwa's are overwhelming in a way photographs flatten.

Then silence and darkness. No city glow within a hundred kilometres means the night sky is genuinely spectacular, the Milky Way visible to the naked eye on a clear winter night. That is the thing people remember.

Worth seeing while you are there

• Tal Moreeb. The big one. Worth the detour even if you only stand at the bottom of it.
• Moreeb Dune viewpoint at sunset, when the whole ridge line turns.
• The Liwa oasis villages and date farms along the crescent.
• Qasr Al Sarab as a landmark, whether or not you stay there.
