Desert Photoshoot Locations Near Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The desert is the most photographed landscape in the UAE and most of it is shot in about four places. Here is what each actually gives you, plus the permit question that catches commercial shoots out.

The locations

Lahbab, the red dunes

About 45 minutes from Downtown Dubai. Iron-rich sand that goes genuinely red in low light, with steep dramatic faces. The most recognisable desert imagery from the UAE comes from here.

Busy. On a winter weekend you will be sharing it with tour convoys and other shoots, so plan for early morning if you want clean frames.

Al Qudra

Closer to the city, flatter, with the lakes nearby for water-and-desert contrast. Good for accessibility and for shoots involving vehicles. Conservation zone, which matters for commercial work.

Al Khatim, Abu Dhabi

About 50 minutes from the Corniche. Paler sand, open horizons, scattered palms, and far fewer people. Better for wide compositions and clean skylines. Our own camp is here, which means shoots can use structures, lighting and a majlis rather than only open sand.

Liwa

Two and a half to three hours from Abu Dhabi and a different scale entirely, dunes over three hundred metres. Unmatched for landscape and scale. The drive means it needs a full day, and it is worth one.

Light

Golden hour is roughly twenty-five usable minutes, and everything is scheduled around it. Arrive at least forty minutes early: walking to position across soft sand takes longer than people plan for, and the light will not wait.

Dawn is better than dusk and consistently under-used. The air is clearer before the day's dust rises, it is cooler, and you will have the location to yourself. It is also, not coincidentally, when several of our desert proposal ideas in Abu Dhabi are timed to happen, if that is what the shoot is quietly building towards.

Blue hour, the twenty minutes after sunset, is excellent for anything with practical lights or a lit structure.

Permits, the part people miss

Personal photography needs nothing. Commercial shoots are different.

• Commercial filming or photography in Dubai's conservation zones needs a Dubai Municipality permit, and branded content usually needs a separate Dubai Development Authority filming notice.
• Drones need approval regardless of location, and this has the longest lead time of anything, three to four weeks. It is the single most common reason a shoot loses its aerials.
• Shooting on a private camp is simplest, since the operator holds the site permits.

Practical

• Sand gets into everything. Change lenses as little as possible, and bring more cleaning kit than you think.
• A second pair of shoes for the walk in. The shot is rarely next to the car.
• Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully in wind, which is the one time wind helps.
• Reflectors fight a losing battle against desert wind; a light with a sandbag beats one without.
• Bring far more water than the shoot list suggests.

How much does a desert photoshoot cost?

Personal shoots cost transport and a photographer. Commercial shoots carry location access, permits, crew and often a 4x4 for kit.

Do I need a permit for a pre-wedding shoot?

Usually not for personal use. If it is being used commercially by the photographer, that changes.

What is the best time of year?

October to April for comfort and clarity. Midwinter has the cleanest air.
