Booking a Whole Desert Camp for a Large Group

Finding somewhere in Abu Dhabi that sleeps twenty people together is harder than finding somewhere that sleeps twenty people. Hotels solve the second problem easily and the first one badly: eight or ten rooms on three different floors, a lobby you share with a conference, and a function room quoted separately if you want to all be in one place at once. Our camp at Al Khatim is listed as one unit, 16+ guests, 10 bedrooms, 20 beds, 2 bathrooms, and it takes one booking per date. Nobody else is on site.
That difference is the whole point of a whole-property booking, and it is worth being specific about what it buys and what it costs you.
The spec, without softening it
Ten bedrooms and twenty beds means the sleeping arrangement is genuinely flexible. Ten couples, or a mix of couples and singles, or a family group where the children share and the adults do not. You allocate it, not a reservations system, and there is no adjoining-room request to lose in a queue.
Two bathrooms for sixteen or more people is the line that deserves an honest paragraph rather than a euphemism. It works when the group knows each other and a morning rota is not awkward. It does not work if half the party are colleagues who have never met, or if anyone needs a private en suite for medical or mobility reasons. Groups that stay here tend to arrive in the afternoon, spend the evening outdoors, and use the bathrooms in a spread rather than all at 7am, which is why the ratio holds up in practice. If that sounds like a compromise your group will resent, book a hotel. We would rather say that now.
What exclusive use means on the night
- No other guests. Not fewer, none. The majlis, the fire, the dune ridge behind the camp and the dining area are all yours.
- Your timings. Supper at nine because a flight lands late, or at seven because there are small children. Nobody is holding a second sitting behind you.
- Your programme. Music or silence. A speech or no speech. The camel walk at the hour the light is right rather than the hour the schedule says.
- Your menu. One group means one brief, so dietary requirements are cooked for rather than labelled on a buffet.
- Your noise. There is no neighbouring table to keep the volume down for, and no corridor of sleeping strangers.
The last one is underrated. Most large-group evenings that go flat go flat because the venue was quietly managing the group down all night.
Against a block of hotel rooms
Be fair to the hotel: it gives you private bathrooms, lifts, air conditioning you control, a front desk at 3am, and a room you can leave a party from at any point. For a group with mixed mobility, small children who need early nights, or a schedule that runs into the city each day, the hotel is the correct answer and nothing here changes that.
What it does not give you is the group being together. Ten rooms is ten separate stays that happen to overlap. The shared part of a hotel stay is a bar you did not choose, or a function room with a minimum spend, a corkage policy, a hard music curfew and a fixed room set that four other events used that month. Add a private dinner to a room block and you are usually paying twice for space.
The camp inverts that. The shared part is the product and the sleeping is the add-on. If your group's reason for travelling is being in the same place, that is the right way round.
Who books it this way
Extended families, most often, where three generations want one table. Groups of friends taking a weekend out of the city without a flight. Company offsites small enough to feel like a team rather than a conference, where the agenda is a conversation round a fire rather than a slide deck, which is a format we cover in more depth under corporate events in Abu Dhabi. Wedding parties the night before, using the camp as the place the two families finally meet properly. And milestone birthdays, where the count lands between "too many for a restaurant" and "too few for a ballroom", which is exactly the gap this size sits in.
For a group larger than the listing's capacity, the answer is usually a built event rather than a stay: more structures, more crew, a different quote. Our guide to large group logistics in the UAE covers where the seams appear as numbers climb.
The practical part
Check-in is after 9:00 am, which is unusually early for a stay and deliberate: it means a group can arrive in daylight, settle, and have the afternoon rather than turning up in the dark and finding their tent by torchlight. Free parking on premises is the one amenity the listing states, and everyone arriving in their own car is normal here since the camp is about fifty minutes from central Abu Dhabi.
Pack as though you were going somewhere without shops, because you are. Layers matter more than people expect between November and March, when the temperature drop after sunset is large. Bring your own toiletries, and bring more phone charging than you think.
Pricing for a whole-property booking is quoted by date rather than published as a nightly rate, and anything that adds a build, a stage, catering at scale or a ceremony moves it out of stay pricing altogether. Our desert event pricing page explains how that side is costed, and the stay itself is bookable through the Airbnb listing page.
Two questions worth asking any large-group venue
Is exclusivity actually contracted? Plenty of camps sell "private" areas within a site that also hosts a coach party of forty. Ask whether another booking can be taken on your date, and get the answer in writing.
What happens if the group grows by four? A hotel adds rooms. A whole property either absorbs it or does not, so ask about the ceiling before you send invitations, not after.
FAQs
Can we book only part of the camp?
No. It is sold as one property for one group per date, which is what makes the exclusivity real rather than nominal.
What is the maximum group size?
The listing is set at 16+ guests across 10 bedrooms and 20 beds. Beyond that we would plan it as a built event, so tell us your number and we will say what is workable.
Are the bathrooms shared?
Yes. There are 2 bathrooms for the whole camp. That suits a group that knows each other and does not suit a group that needs en suites.
Can we bring our own food or caterer?
Supper is cooked on site as part of the stay. If you want an outside caterer or a specific menu, raise it when you enquire rather than on the day.
How far ahead should a large group book?
For weekends between October and March, months rather than weeks. One booking per date means there is no second slot when the first goes.
Can we use it for a day event and not stay overnight?
Yes, exclusive-use day hire is available and priced separately from an overnight booking.
